Township Stories and Realities - Friday Feeling

"A single bracelet does not jingle." — African proverb

One volunteer can serve a meal.

One gogo can tell a story.

But when they come together — the driver, the cook, the teenager with the patience, the neighbour dropping off a box of books — the whole thing starts making a sound people can hear.

This week had a lot of bracelets.

Heading into the weekend: who's in your bracelet?

Tag them below.

Township Stories and Realities - Gogo Storytime

This week we launch Gogo Storytime: elders reading and telling stories to children at the reading corner, every week.

Mam' Thandi has agreed to lead the first session, and two more gogos from her street have said they'll join her.

What we still need: children's books in Sesotho, isiZulu, and Setswana; a few sturdy chairs that don't wobble; and one or two younger volunteers to help set up and walk the elders home afterwards.

R150 buys a set of home-language picture books for the storytime shelf. Donate through the link in our bio, or message us if you can drop off books or chairs.

Township Stories & Realities - Sipho

Sipho is 15. On Wednesdays after school, he's the one the little ones wait for.

He started coming to the reading corner to do his homework somewhere quieter than home, where four siblings share two rooms.

Then 8-year-old Kagiso asked him what a word said.

Then the next word. Now Wednesdays belong to Sipho.

He's patient in a way that surprises the adults: he lets Kagiso sound it out, waits, and only jumps in when she's properly stuck.

Sipho wants to study engineering one day.

For now, he's helping build readers.

Know a teenager who'd be good at this?

Our Wednesday reading buddies need two more volunteers aged 14–18. Message us to find out more.
