Township Stories & Realities - Bab' Vusi

Bab' Vusi is 68. Every morning before 6am, he's already bent over a patch of spinach and beetroot behind his house.

Two years ago, he turned an empty plot next to his home into a vegetable garden after watching the feeding scheme in his area stretch further and further to cover more families each month. “The pot needs more than maize meal,” he says. “It needs greens too.”

Today that small garden feeds into three community kitchens nearby. He's trained six young people from the neighbourhood to work the soil with him, teaching them to grow their own food long after they leave his garden.

Bab' Vusi doesn't call himself anything special. He just says someone had to start digging.

Call to Action

A bag of seedlings and basic tools costs around R250 and helps gardens like Bab' Vusi's keep growing. If you'd like to help stock the next one, here is the link https://www.clrfoundation.com/donate-1
