Ma Lerato and Bra Jabu

When the tippy-taps needed building, nobody hired anyone. Ma Lerato knocked on Bra Jabu's door.

Bra Jabu is 52. He works night shift as a security guard and usually sleeps until noon.

That afternoon he built two tippy-taps out of 5-litre containers, poles and string. Then he fixed the gate hinge, the wobbly leg on Thabo's table, and a wheelbarrow nobody knew was broken.

He won't take thanks. He does take porridge. The children now race each other to the foot pedal.

Handy with tools and free on a Saturday morning?

Message us. Bra Jabu has a list, and he says he needs "an apprentice who listens."
