A school uniform, ironed and ready by 5am — even when the electricity had been off since midnight. That's Thandiwe's morning, every morning.
She walks her three children to the local primary school before doubling back to queue at the community tap with a 25-litre container. Water access in her section of the township is still unreliable, and load shedding makes the mornings harder than they should be. But she doesn't dwell on what's missing — she talks about what's working. The stokvel she runs with four other mothers on her street means that when one family's cupboard is bare, someone else's usually isn't. That's the township reality: hardship and hustle exist side by side, and neither one cancels out the other.
