Bab' Simon doesn't cook, and he doesn't garden. What he does is build.
At 71, he spends most Fridays in his small shed with a saw and whatever scrap wood the local hardware store sets aside for him, building benches and shelving for the feeding points around his street.
The bench outside the school kitchen where mothers wait for the afternoon meal — that's his. So is the shelving that finally got the maize meal sacks up off the damp floor.
He says he can't stand at a stove for hours like the mamas do, so he found the thing he could do instead, and he's been doing it for three years.
