Lindiwe is 9.
Her favourite part of the school day used to be the walk home — now it's the vegetable patch behind her classroom.
Six weeks ago, the strip of dry ground behind her primary school was just dust and a broken fence.
Now it's rows of spinach and beans that Lindiwe and her classmates water every afternoon before the feeding scheme cooks lunch.
Her teacher says attendance has gone up on the days the class tends the garden — the kids don't want to miss their turn.
It's slow work, and the soil is hard to dig in the dry season, but the first harvest is close, and Lindiwe already has a favourite row.
