Nonhlanhla is 10. This week, for the first time, she has a book that belongs to her and nobody else.
It's a small, worn picture book, donated by a family across town, and she has already read it twice.
Until now, the only books she's seen up close were the shared classroom copies, three learners to a desk.
We're setting up a small reading corner next to the feeding point — a few shelves, a stack of donated books, somewhere for kids to sit after they've eaten.
It won't fix a stretched school library on its own, but it means Nonhlanhla has somewhere to go with a book in her hands, and that's new.
